My suggested Summer read this year is definitely Annabel by Kathleen Winter. I wanted to read this book for a long time, since hearing about it when it was first published, and especially as the buzz started increasing when Winter became nominated for literary prize after literary prize. I finally picked up a copy at the Atlantic Book Awards in May, where Winter won the much-deserved $20,000 Thomas Head Raddall award for this novel. I’m so glad I finally read this book. Annabel is such an interesting and compelling story–about the life of Wayne Blake, a hermaphrodite growing up in Croyden Harbour, Labrador. It’s touching, eloquently written and I couldn’t put it down. It’s the type of story where you come to know, understand and care for each character. I’ve already told my friends and family they must read this book.
(On a side note, I’m very excited I’ve just received an advanced reading copy of Trudy Morgan-Cole’s next novel, That Forgetful Shore. While I can’t recommend it since I haven’t read it yet, I will say that I can’t wait to start it because I absolutely loved her first book, By the Rivers of Brooklyn. It is the next summer read on my list!)
