This is one of the finest, most interactive reader experiences I’ve heard of. It’s book marketing at its finest. The book itself is great too. There’s a fierceness to these poems; a confidently wild use of langauge. The poems pop off the page with the same fervour in which Robinson has written them.
To quote from ECW’s website: “Part extended love song to and for a city, and part meditation on what a city can both say to and about us, Against the Hard Angle uses some of Halifax’s most and least famous places as jumping off points for a stop-and-start lyrical tour of eastern Canada’s largest urban centre.
ECW have created a ”Halifax in Verse” Google map, so you can see (or stand at) various sites of inspiration for all 14 of the poems in the collection’s second section, toeing the slack-roped narrows. If you live in or are traveling to Halifax, you can print it off and take with you. If you don’t live in Halifax, all of the landmarks are pinpointed and paired with representative poetic snippets, so you can view the map online (there are street-view photos). A truly fantastic idea and literary experience right? Yeah, so go buy the book and reward their efforts.
The map is below, for more info on Against the Hard Angle, visit ECW’s website, and for more info on the much-anthologized and multi-award-winning Matt Robinson, click here.
